Each time I login to Unity or KDE, a dialog for a distro upgrade appears and I must press the close button.
How can I make this dialog window not show up?

There are many similar questions on this site, still it is not clear to me which answer to these questions applies to my situation, so please forgive me for asking again.

I have a HP EliteBook 2540p. I want to upgrade my Ubuntu 16.04 to a newer release. I found that I need to upgrade to 18.04 before going to 20.04.
I tried the recommended procedure by updating the system and upgrading software and packages using this command:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

I have Ubuntu 18.10 and want to update to 20.04 LTS but after this standard procedure:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
sudo do-release-upgrade
But when I execute the last command I got this: Please install all available updates for your release before upgrading.
I noticed that when I upgrade I got this: 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 ...
I attempted an upgrade from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS. I ran do-release-grade on a direct terminal connection; I also had a Remmina RDP session running, and an SSH console open, just in case.
The update failed with a mass of text on the terminal window; if that text is available in full in some log file, I've been unable to find it.
The filesystem is read-only at this point, despite what mount says:

It's high time I upgrade Ubuntu from 18.04 to 20.04! But I don't get very far before the process aborts without an error message. Is there a log file I can check for further information?

I was trying to upgrade from 20.10 to 21.04. I fully updated the system (no reboot was required), then ran do-release-upgrade
