Good morning.
What would be the most appropriate ubuntu version for an older laptop that has previously run Windows vista? I want to use it as an educational tool for my 12 year old son.

I wish to turn a laptop into a device that does nothing but word-processing, with the option to save/load files from a usb thumb drive. The only way out of this mode would be with a password. The single-app mode should persist across reboots.
How can I use Ubuntu in "kiosk mode" to run only a word processor?
The fan on my laptop only works occassionally (I estimate it's about 15% of the time). The fan won't work most of the time then, occasionally (usually at least once a day) when I'm playing quite low resource games or using my web browser the fan will randomly turn on, it seems to always stay on for at least 1 minute after turning on, but then after a minutes it suddenly turns off.
Most of the tim ...

I have a very old laptop with intel pentium t4400, 2 GB ddr2 ram, gma 4500mhd (mobile intel gm45), but currently there's no hard drive on this laptop. I wonder how if I install ubuntu on this machine (for simple browsing, typing on google docs), should I install the latest version of Ubuntu or the older one? and is it bottleneck or overkill if I put ssd on this machine ?
I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, and after multiple attempts to install a stable version, it finally worked. However, I face issues with receiving and sending data over any network. Portable hotspot and home networks do not send or receive data. I do connect to those networks with no issue, however. I have spent hours trying to find a working solution, but I haven't found any. I recently installed Ubuntu in my laptop. It was ran perfectly with my wireless keyboard and mouse.
Yesterday, I replaced my wireless keyboard because some keys stopped working and bought a Dell wired keyboard. I connected and tried it with my laptop. It was working fine, but after two minutes, it started stuttering and all keys automatically get typed!
I thought it is keyboard's fault. So I replace ...

I have two laptops, each a sub-variant of the main model. (AMD Acer A515-44 & Intel Acer A515-56)
For one laptop (Intel variant) the built-in KB/M works like normal, but for the other the keyboard and touchpad only works in grub and the beginning of the boot sequence.
Ctrl+F in the logs for "ELAN" shows they are both being identified, but only one model is working.

Touchpad is not behaving as it used to be, at least not to what I've been accustomed to.
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- boot either kubuntu or lubuntu Live-CD 20.04 and
- use the touchpad after GUI started
I'd expect that the touchpad's behavior would be similiar to the standard touchpad behavior, at least some/most of them.
However, nothing works that way:

I'm using Xubuntu 21.10
on an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401QM-K2030T
laptop. When I close the laptop lid the desktop freezes. Could someone help resolve this issue?
Afterwords:
It seems that the problem appears not only when I close the lid, but also if the computer stays idle for some time.

I have read a lot of similar questions on askubuntu but all of them mention losing not more than an hour or two of battery life and even then just suggest tlp. For me, I get 6.5 hours of battery life on Windows 10 (battery saving mode) but only 3 hours of battery life on Ubuntu. I installed tlp which increased it by half an hour. Is this normal?

I have Ubuntu 20.04 installed on a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 laptop. I get poor, tinny, blown-out sound quality at all volume levels whenever I try to play a video on Brave browser or whenever I play a video on Firefox other than on Youtube or whenever I play a downloaded webm or mp4 or such. Very occasionally those videos will play fine, but rarely. I can, however, get the audio to sound good if I play a y ...

When my computer's lid closes, Ubuntu suspends everything normally. However, upon logging in, one of two things happens. In the past, it would log me in but all of the data from the previous session will be gone. Right now, logging in will take me to the kernel screen, at which point I have to restart the computer.
I have already taken one measure, and I will edit this question with other measure ...
I have an issue where upon closing the lid of my laptop (defined behaviour is to suspend), my wifi will break entirely. I've tried on both Arch and Ubuntu and the same issue occurs. I have tried restarting NetworkManager to no avail. It appears the wireless interface is being set to the DOWN state, but nothing seems to be able to bring it back up, without a reboot.

I have a Lenovo C940 with Ubuntu 20.04 installed. When I fold my laptop over so that the keyboard is face down and the screen is angled slightly away from me, the keyboard and trackpad do not disable. They disable properly on Windows. How can I fix this?
I am using Ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop attached with a Dell monitor. My Nvidia driver version is 465.27 with a GeForce 3070 card. My external monitor becomes extremely slow when I close the laptop lid.
I read several posts:
I just got a framework laptop and I installed Ubuntu 21.04 and everything has been working great so far. The only thing is I can't get it to recognize an external monitor I have. This is the monitor which supports video through USB C and my ports all support DP output. When I plug in both power and video my laptop makes a noise like something has connected, but the screen always says no signal.

So I have the Asus Strix G513QY with a Ryzen 9 5900HX and a Radeon 6800M 12GB as dGPU.
Now I set up Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.3 in dual boot alongside Windows 10. By default, the system doen't recognize my dGPU which is unfortunate because I need it for the DP output and obviously for some more demanding tasks.
I then decided to install the drivers from AMD's website 1 using the install command. That didn't wor ...
