I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS with GNOME Desktop. I was wondering if you can have a custom sound play (the default one is nice, but I'd rather have a custom one) when you log into Ubuntu, as well as when you log out.
I've gotten a nostalgia rush from when I used to use Windows XP in 2008-ish on a Dell Optiflex with the Royale Noir theme for log on and the Windows Vista Beta 2 for logout, and genuinel ...

I have recently installed Ubuntu onto my old (early) 2008 Macbook.
I installed Ubuntu 18 and was all working fine, then I have updated my Ram to 4gb instead of the standard 1Gb.
After this I have updated to Ubuntu 20.04, all seems to be working as it should however, when I power off the machine, it will exit on the screen display with "Ubuntu" at the bottom center and not complete the power off... ...
I had a problem where ubuntu was restarting automatically after poweroff. I added
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=noirq quiet splash"
To /etc/default/grub according to this answer. After shutting down, it still rebooted, and now I'm stuck. I've tried long pressing the power key, pressing ctrl+alt+F3, but nothing works. Please help me.
I'm fairly new to using ubuntu and brand new to using ubuntu server. I've been working on setting up a physical home server to run some basic tasks. I had the server up and running fine for a couple of days, but then I noticed I was having issues connecting to the server via ssh and then I discovered the server was actually off. I would turn it back on, and it would be fine and then about 45 mins later ...
I have ASUS ROG GL503E running ubuntu dual booted with windows. On Ubuntu almost always on opening my laptop lid acpi detects temperature to be 100 C and shuts down the machine, even though physically the machine is not warm at all. This only happens on Ubuntu and not on Windows. That is why I suspect this to be a software issue than a hardware one. Could this be due to an acpi bug? I also upgraded my B ...
I have a C246 mainboard with a Xeon CPU and ECC RAM. Using Ubuntu 20.04, the system randomly shuts off completely, as if power was lost.
At first, I suspected a HW problem. I switched the PSU, I swapped the mainboard (same model) and I ran MemTest to check RAM. The problem can occur when using a USB device (installer) or when installed to a disk. I tried installing Windows and never observed a sh ...

My Laptop (running Ubuntu 20.04.3 with Gnome DE) is turning off by itself, like, I'm playing a game then the screen gets black and then there's text basically indicating its shutting down (I don't have silent nor splash in my grub settings), I have heard my hard drive clicking so I'm scared those two are correlated, I've ran SMART tests but they say everything is fine. So I want to find the logs of when ...
I just installed Kubuntu 21.04
. I am using dual boot (Windows10 + Kubuntu). Kubutnu takes around 20 secs
to shut down. Boot time is 3-4 seconds fast because of SSD. Problem is only with Kubuntu while shutdown. It takes long time.
For the solution, I go to this askUbtunu link, but I don't have sendsigs
file in /etc/init.d/
.
Why does it so ?

From the official document shown on http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/groovy/man8/pm-action.8.html,

For a few years I'm running Ubuntu on my home server. New thing this year in my area are short but frequent power grid outages.
After each such power failure my system is not booting to desktop, but to emergency mode.
A solution is simply to reboot the system by hitting the reset button - a bit inconvenient since the system is placed in obscure corner at the attic.
It is even harder when I'm away... ;-) ...
As the title says my laptop immediately shuts down when I enter CS:GO game.
I launch steam with "launch with dedicate graphic card" and play CS:GO from the library everything works fine in the lobby until I enter the game then my laptop shuts down.
As the title says I borked an upgrade. It paused for a moment to ask me something about gnome settings, and I pressed "D" for details, and then ctrl+c to try and get out of the output it gave.
Now I cannot open a terminal, nor can I shutdown through the GUI. Firefox is working fin though obviously. Alt+F2 also works, or at least the command window pops up

I've got a brand new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen. 9 with no pre-installed OS. After checking that Secure Boot is Off and OS Optimized Defaults are Disabled, I installed Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. I recently had passwordless SSH shutdown and reboot working on Ubuntu 20.04, but after upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04 it no longer works.
I have key based authentication set up correctly, and can ssh into the Ubuntu 21.04 computer without a password. But my passwordless shutdown and reboot commands no longer work.
My /etc/sudoers file has the following as the last entry:

For the last 5 shut downs, my laptop has been going to black screen as if shut down (no keyboard light or anything), but the fans continue to run. Pushing on the power off button does not do anything and I am basically forced to wait for the laptop to run out of battery. There does not seem to be any specific error message popping.

So I accidentally ran a script which used up all of the RAM on my ubuntu system, and I had to force it to power off. When I rebooted the system, programs would randomly segfault, even though I changed nothing and they had never done this before. How would I fix my server so that these programs start working again? I've already tried reinstalling them via APT, but that doesn't seem to help.

I'm a newbie to Linux. I installed Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS on my NUC10i7FNH and it seemed to go well (https://itsfoss.com/install-linux-on-intel-nuc/).
When the NUC reboots it shows a GNU GRUB version 2.04 menu with three options - Ubuntu, Unbuntu (other options), Bios (I think).
If I select the 'Ubuntu' option the NUC shuts down after about 2 seconds and the following message is briefly displayed: /dev/nvme ...

I’m trying to run a script at shutdown and reboot without success. I have a script to run as root at startup and it works just fine: stored the script in /etc/init.d, created a link to it in /etc/rc2.d starting with S99 and make it executable. After some research I did the same with the shutdown script creating the links in /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d, making it executable and starting links name with â ...
