SSHD: Difference between "connection closed..." and "disconnected from..." in log file
es flag

The sshd service on my Ubuntu server is under constant attack for various IP and user id.

According to /var/log/auth.log file, there are three different types of fails from unknown id and IP address:

  • Disconnected from invalid user...
  • Connection closed by invalid user...
  • Connection closed by xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

What is the difference among the three? Do any of these suggest a successful (unauthorized)  ...

Why does WHM / cPanel keep saying my password is weak and must be 65 strength at least?
es flag

I've been trying to create my very first account on https://trycpanel.net/wwwacctform.html, but I've faced a weird error.
Basically, I want to set a password for my account. But, it keeps saying it's weak and must be at least 65 strength. Even though, I used auto-generate password and wrote a really strong one by myself, but nothing seems to work. All I get is this error: https://i.stack.imgur.com/ ...

Best way to update a binary?
mp flag

So I'm making a load balancer that compiles to a binary. This will be scaled across multiple servers.

To update, the program itself will check a GitHub repo for a new release every 5 minutes, if there is a new release, it downloads it overwriting the old one, then would run the command systemctl restart lb.

Now my question is, is this a bad practice, are there any disadvantages to doing this, and ...

Where to use the SSL certification files for your server domain?
es flag

I was learning to create a Telegram bot and I had to get a server with HTTPS prefix in order to use my bot on Telegram. I used free host, and a free domain, and a free net2FTP. So I can control nothing but my domain directories.

Right now, I'm on the last step to get a free SSL certification on my domain using SSLForFree and ZeroSSL. The problem is that they gave me an SSL certification files say ...

Increased my VM disk size on Google Cloud Platform and now the SSH log in is asking for a password?
in flag

I increased the disk size on my VM instance running on Google Cloud Platform. There was a simple change from 200 GB to 400 GB with no other changes made on the Instance. When I started the instance after making the changes and trying to login through my passwordless private SSH keys on PuTTY, the server refused my keys and I can't open SSH through the browser either (It just says connecting and then cou ...

Prevent automatic Windows DNS from registering global IPv6 addresses
za flag

When having IPv6 enabled the automatic Windows DNS registration adds AAAA records for both the ULA and the global unicast address. This is not a problem for most networks, but causes issues when using a VPN without routing the global addresses through it (which is not always viable). Thus I would like to prevent it from registering the global address, but haven't found an option for that so far.

Windows Client Gateway on other Subnet
in flag

I have two subnets.

192.168.232.0/28
192.168.232.16/28

The Cloudprovider(Hetzner) gives me a gateway 192.168.232.17 for the subnet 192.168.232.16/28. I have a windows client 192.168.232.19 in this subnet. I have a Mikrotik/Firewall/Gateway on 192.168.232.2 in subnet 192.168.232.0/28.

If i use on 192.168.232.19 the default gateway 192.168.232.17 I can ping 192.168.232.2 and the other way around.

how delete last boom entry

I am using lvm snapshot and boom on centos 7 to have a restore point before updating my servers. It is a cumbersome process so I started creating a script to make it semi-automatic. The biggest challenge that I have, is deleting the boom entry. I can find the BootID with piping boom list to sed and use that to delete the entry. Is there any better way to accomplish this? The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
