random Nginx 408 errors during ajax post
cn flag

I'm using jQuery to post some form data to my Nginx server but sometimes it fails with a 408 error. When the error happens, apparently the php script to process the posted data is NOT reached at all, as I put some logging function in the first line. And the most weird part is, with the same form data, sometimes the script works, sometimes not. I couldn't figure out why.

How to get AD site name with winbind/samba-tool
cn flag
ZDV

I have several Ubuntu desktops in a Samba AD domain, I need a way to know which site a member is in with the member's shell. The members use samba/winbind to communicate with the domain.

I have read manuals for wbinfo/samba-tool/net, but can't find anything similar to nltest /dsgetsite on windows.

Is there any solution to this?

I have a redirect from root to subfolder. If user visits https://example.com it redirects to https://example.com/subfolder. But I want it not to redirect if referrer is my site, so user can reach root page.

For example:

  2. It redirects to https://example.com/subfolder
  3. User visits https://example.com/subfolder/file.html

Centos7 server that has no IPV6 assigned to it, can't read IPV6 ips in access log
br flag

I'm using CentOS7, nginx as a reverse proxy and apache web server. This server doesn't have IPv6 assigned to it, therefore there is no IPV6 in the NIC. This server hosts several websites.

When I check the access log, if a visitor has IPV6-only IP, I would only see my server's internal NIC IP instead of the actual visitor's IPv6. If a visitor has an IPv4 IP, I would see the visitor's IPv4.

Postfix stop all outgoing emails except exceptions

In order to avoid spam sent from my server I'm trying to get Postfix to block all outgoing emails, except the ones sent from specific email address (like [email protected]), and allow all incoming emails to all addresses listed in a mysql db.

I managed to configure the imcoming part, but I'm struggling to block the outgoing emails.

How do I do that? Is there a way I can test if the server actually bloc ...

Dangling ssh sessions when my laptop goes to sleep
be flag

When I get up from my laptop (a Mac with MacOS Big Sur) for long enough that it "goes to sleep", my interactive sessions with ssh servers are broken. That is annoying but I could live with it. What is worse, though, is that the server side forked sshd processes seem to stick around forever, with the socket in the ESTABLISHED state. I really don't understand why -- I have set up both TCP keep alives and  ...

How to see which ports a process is using?

While testing our software, a large corporate customer was able to detect the third-party licensing software using port 137.

Up until this point we have only been aware of the license software using port 443.

I have looked into this with netstat, Get-NetTCPConnection, and TCPView but I can only find process activity on port 443.

When I asked the licensing company about this they acknowledged they use 1 ...

Which to use in List-Unsubscribe header?
jp flag

I followed this link to add my unsubscribe email header as below,

/^Content-Transfer-Encoding:/i PREPEND List-Unsubscribe: mailto:<sender-email-address>?subject=unsubscribe>"

so that the unsubscribe requests could directly go to the sender, instead to a specific email address, such as the case at this link, where the header uses mailto: like List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:[email protected]>

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
