Windows share requires authentication only when accessed locally

ng flag

I have a Windows server (Server_1, 192.168.1.1) that has a network share (filesshare). The share permissions are "Full control" for "Everyone". This server also has a CNAME (file_server_alias). Any other machine on the network can access this share using any of the following UNC paths:

\\Server_1\fileshare

\\192.168.1.1\fileshare

\\file_server_alias\fileshare

This is all expected and working fine.

However if you are logged onto Server_1 and try to access it's share only these ways work:

\\Server_1\fileshare

\\192.168.1.1\fileshare

When trying to access the share through the CNAME it asks for network credentials and will not work no matter the logins provided.

Why is this not possible?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
