Samba D states - High CPU usage

cn flag

Currently the server that is providing samba service to a bunch of clients (Linux and Windows clients) is having 100% CPU usage and high sysload.

Looking through the process list (ps aux), there's a long list of smbd process in D state now - killing them doesn't do anything.

From top, most of the high CPU utilization processes are due to smbd.

  1. What is the best way to determine the reason for the high sysload/CPU from smbd? Looking through the server and smbd logs doesn't tell me anything concrete

  2. Will pulling the network cable of the server (and restarting smbd service) disconnect/resolve all the zombie smbd processes? As much as possible, I do not wish to reboot the server.

The first thing to look at with processes stuck in D state is your disk subsystem.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
