Ubuntu server upgrade from 14.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS guide checklist

va flag

As the title suggests, this is a large operation. I already tried doing the dist upgrades in-place to avoid downtime on this production VM, but by the time I get to 20.04 LTS, most of the web applications and setup no longer work correctly.

So I feel like my only option is to install a fresh VM with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on it, use an adjacent IP address, then cutover once happy.

However there are a lot of data and services/config/programs to put on the new VM, and I'm afraid of missing something important (just for some context, this live server is running around 200-500 concurrent users 24hrs a day on 2 SaaS applications).

Does anyone know of a good guide or 'pre-flight' checklist that I can use to ensure nothing is forgotten on the new VM? Has anyone done this before, and now has extremely valuable experience and knowledge regarding this?

Thanks in advance!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
