I have an Intel SC5520HC based server that runs as a computational machine for students at the university lab i work at that won't currently power up or powers up intermittently. We've had x2 power supplies in the life of the machine, with the second (current) one being quite new (in terms of usage). I had it powered up after being transported from a previous location, after running updates and powering down, the next time we tried running it, I got the 1-5-4-2 BMC error code. After reading around a lot, I decided to leave it unplugged and powered off, after which i started up ok. Then again today, its giving me a 1-5-4-4 after startup and then 1-5-4-2 ongoing.
Question is, how likely is it to be the power supply, the paperclip test suggested it was ok, but i did smell faint burning during one of the powerups. If it is the PSU, why would the machine be going through a new PSU so quickly? The original PSU was the Intel OEM part but the latest one is the Corsair RMx850. Any ideas why leaving it off would allow it to restart?
I've air cleaned everything, reseated all the RAM + cards, and tried running with all the peripherals unpowered, and with only x1 CPU power socket lead plugged in as well, without luck. Any ideas.
