MX record with only one dot, possible?

ca flag

Lets say I have the following DNS active for domain example.com (leaving out ttl)

example.com MX 0 .

Does it mean that the MX record does point to example.com? That server with name example.com will handle mail for example.com domain?

An MX record consisting of only a single dot . is a Null MX as defined in RFC 7505. It means that the domain doesn't accept any email.

It still needs a preference of `0` too, it can not be just a dot.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
