DSTAT output scrambled on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS using macOS Monterey terminal

cn flag

The problem

When I logon to a machine running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and run 'dstat' I get this kind of output:

garbled dstat output

So regular dstat output is ok, but as soon as you enter 'dstat ' things go wrong. Instead of updating the line in-place, the screen gets shuffled.

What I have tried

  • Using a different mac running Monterey resulted in the same problem
  • Using a different terminal app iTerm solved the problem*
  • running dstat under screen or tmux solved the problem*
  • starting a screen on macos and then ssh into the linux system solved the problem*
  • clearing the environment on the Ubuntu resulted in the same problem
  • using a different shell on the Ubuntu system resulted in the same problem

[*] I don't see these options as solutions.

Screen / tmux are terminal substitutions and every time they are used, like iTerm, the problem is solved it seems, but that's not a definitive solution for me. I'd like to understand what's going on and what screen/tmux/iTerm fixes that is causing this issue.

Does anyone have an idea?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
