Custom ubuntu package compiled locally says upgrade available even though what's in the repo is the same version

nl flag

I have obtained the source package for one of the things installed on my Ubuntu system, made a change to the source code, built a binary package, and installed it.

Now that package ALWAYS shows up in the list of upgradable packages, even though what's in the repo is the exact same version.

I have put a hold on that package, which works ... but I don't want to see that package in the list of upgradable packages at all unless what's in the repo is actually a newer version, at which point I will once again make a custom version of the package. I mostly use aptitude for package management, occasionally doing "apt install" or "apt purge" from the commandline.

I just figured out how to have it behave as I need it to. I added a new section at the top of the debian/changelog file, and added a suffix to the version number. The package in question is vpnc. --- vpnc (0.5.3r550-3.1+0dpd) unstable; urgency=medium * Disable dead peer detection by default. ---

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
