How to "create" a Domain Name

in flag

Normally when I want to buy/rent a domain I do it like this:

  1. Visit providers site e.g. Go-Daddy
  2. Search for a desired domain name
  3. Rent the domain for a probably too high price

Now what is the process/list of things to do if I want to use a Domain Name that is not yet used? Is it for free? And whats the process there of getting SSL Certificates?

Im asking this out of curiosity. I'm not sure if its fitting for this forum, I will happily move it if not.

Don't create problems for you in the future: for all your "internal/private" needs, just register a domain, `example.com` and then use it as suffix for all your internal needs like `.int.example.com`. Far simpler and foolproof than anything else. Otherwise, NEVER invent names or even TLDs for local needs. Other than that even if you move your question to somewhere where it will be more on topic, you miss explaining what you are really attempting to do. Especially "rent the domain for a probably too high price" because there are lots of providers (called registrars) and lots of prices even low

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
