Large files change randomly upon access

I have a weird case of errors. Single bytes of big binary files seem to change randomly but consistently.

For example I copy a large dump via scp (5 GB). And when I make sha256sum it is different then on source computer. I make a 2nd copy and its checksum is different then both previous.

It's not only about sending files though. I check svn with tools that check file integrity and the files also has invalid checksum. And it is consistent about which revisions are broken. So running the check again yield same failure.

I did a smartctl check and the tool doesn't report any problems. And problems occur both on nvme and hdd.

Are you sure the computer where the byte changes happen is not infected with a ransomware? Modern versions do not encrypt the files fully but e.g. just every tenth byte.

I thought about it, but its not every file that gets destroyed. Small files seem to be not affected at all. I would expect ransomeware to do much more damage. And there were no ransom demands.

Also the files randomly return back to normal. Sometimes. As if some cache was broken or something...

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
