DNS A record host pointing itself
de flag

Ok, so I have done a really stupid thing,

enter image description here

Basicly I pointed the A record host to itself, of course what I intended to do wasn't working doh. And I changed the host to "@". BUT i was wondering what could happen if I left this in place.

Why I am asking this : For multiple days every 12h my server disconnected from internet (all ports, even ssh). I had to hard reboot. Looking at logs after, nothing specifi ...

Docker container dosnt see new group that I added
cn flag

I have my user theuser who belongs to the groups docker and systemd-coredump. When I login via ssh I can see via the groups command that I do indeed have the systemd-coredump group. The strange thing is my docker container (running as theuser) can not read a file that is set to RW for the systemd-coredump group.

Should I need to restart the docker service to fix this or is a complete system reboot needed? ...

nagios-nrpe-server output different vs running locally
pl flag

To be sure I don't have any double definition of the command, I created a new debug command name in the nrpe config

/etc/nagios/nrpe.d # grep -R debug
debug.cfg:command[debug_check_disks]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w 20% -c 5% -C -w 10000 -c 5000 -p /home -p /

Executing it via nrpe plugin gives me a warning

Can I install dnsmasq on lamp web server?
ca flag

Is it possible to install and run dnsmasq on a shared host webserver (standard lamp stack)? And how would one do this?

I use Siteground and Dreamhost. I think I can run a lamp stack on my NAS too which I may have more permissions for.

Being linux based, I'm assuming it's possible but I know shared services can have limited permissions.

Ubuntu SFTP "fatal: bad ownership or modes for chroot directory component"
tt flag

I know this has been answered before, but all the answers make absolutely no sense in my use-case to be honest. I'm hosting a Laravel application on my Ubuntu server, and I've created a separate user laravel and cloned my app into; /var/www/my-app.

Essentially, I want to enable SFTP for /var/www/my-app/storage/app so that I can upload files to process in my web app. Security isn't too big of an is ...

I need to remove the local computer I'm logged in to an AD domain joined beforehand, and this with powershell, non-interactively.

I have not found any thread about it, so I wanted to create one to help others with a self-answered question.

How to block all outgoing connections from a particular user except localhost?
id flag

I wish to block all outgoing connections from a particular user user after they have ssh'd into my server (running RHEL 7.4), that is, user should not be able to ssh into/ping other servers on the network.

I initially configured the following firewall-cmd rule, and it was working.

firewall-cmd --direct --permanent --add-rule ipv4 filter OUTPUT 0 -m owner --uid-owner user -j DROP

I am in this situation. I have an Active Directory domain with forest level still at 2003. The servers are Windows Server 2012R2. I would like to raise the forest level to the same level as the servers. But i also have two nas registered to the domain. So the question is: if i raise the forest level to 2012R2 the two nas will no longer dialogue with the domain?

Or does raising the forest level af ...

I'm aware of this question https://stackoverflow.com/questions/41224738/how-to-calculate-system-memory-usage-from-proc-meminfo-like-htop Answer seems outdated regarding memory usage and this question seems more complex.

htop definitely now doesn't calculate total memory via MemTotal - MemFree anymore. There https://access.redhat.com/solutions/406773 I found a soluation that could fit. According to that  ...

Mod_Security prevent brute force for Joomla
vn flag

I am trying to find/create a Mod_Security rule to detect & block multiple login failures on the latest version of Joomla. I found an answer from March 2015 here: https://serverfault.com/a/646608/960638 but in my own tests it does not detect login failures. Even with logging enabled it's not detecting anything. I suspect the code is outdated.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
