Tcpdump showing different redirection port after adding REDIRECT rule in iptables
us flag

I am attempting to direct client traffic to a kubernetes cluster NodePort listening on 192.168.1.100.30000.

Client's needs to make a request to 192.168.1.100.8000 so I added the following REDIRECT rule in iptables:

iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp --dst 192.168.1.100 --dport 8000 -j REDIRECT --to-port 30000

I then issue a curl to 192.168.1.100:8000 however, in tcpdump i see a different port: ...

How to execute some command always after hard reboot (ubuntu server)?
us flag

I am facing an issue that everytime I hard restart my server (maybe went bananas due to out of memory, ddosed etc) supervisor fails to run. And the reason for that is identified and simply /var/run/supervisor directory is deleted.

I learned that /var/run folders are deleted on hard reboot (via ec2 panel for instance force stop then start), so my humble question is:

How can I execute this mkdir /var/run/ ...

Now I'm able to boot the OS. As I made clean copy of the /etc directory just after buying the "new" dedicated server and installing Ubuntu server 20.04, i proceeded to:

ETCD snapshots causing etcdserver: leader changed
ly flag

For a while now we've experienced regular errors from operations on kube API in AKS resulting in etcdserver: leader changed message. From what we've learned there is an ETCD snapshot performed every 2h on AKS resulting in this leader change. This 2h window seems coherent with our experience of disruptions.

I was under the impression that ETCD snapshots do not directly or indirectly cause a change ...

Parsing PHP code in .html, .phtml in Plesk/Debian

I have updated my Plesk system from Debian 8 (PHP7) to Debian 11 (PHP 8.1.4) using the Plesk-internal backup function, everything worked fine at the first glimpse. However, I can't get PHP 8 (FPM) to handle my .html or .phtml files anymore, the sections remain 'meta code' in the HTML and doesn't get parsed.

Of course I have already tried everything I could find, the php.ini change in /var/www/vh ...

Migrating Ubuntu 18.04 LTS from hyper-v to ESXi
cn flag

I'm trying to migrate a Ubuntu server 18.04 from hyper-v to VMWare VCenter 7.0.2. I found out after the fact that 18.04 is not supported by the VCenter converter 6.2. Is there anyway to successfully migrate this over from hyper-v? I tried running a repair of GRUB since that is the issue by the looks of it, but it does not work.

OpenVPN server - does dropping previleges affect accessing files at runtime?

In OpenVPN's hardening article, it is recommended that the server daemon drop its privileges after startup on Linux:

OpenVPN has been very carefully designed to allow root privileges to be dropped after initialization, and this feature should always be used on Linux/BSD/Solaris. Without root privileges, a running OpenVPN server daemon provides a far less enticing target to an attacker.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
