last night I had the problem after a sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade; sudo apt autoremove
It did everything normally but when I rebooted the ubuntu crashed, I tried literally everything I could find on forums to bring it back to life but it was simply not possible. So I will share my solution.
Found the latest ubuntu image today 20.04.2 and with a usb stick first I tried it, and moved my files to my secondary hard drive to be able to format entirely my primary ssd.
after all this I installed this new versión and currently reinstalling all my packages.
I'm a bit new to linux, still love it. Just never found the solution to my problem. I did try every tty user (ctrl + alt + f*) and literally every command I was able to find on ubuntu forums. nothing worked, I tried to find also a way to make my usb image to fix it even with my older version 20.04 but nothing worked, not even grub. so I gave up and reinstalled it from scratch but with this newer version. 20.04.2
even tried to update distro from root.
at first the ctrl + alt + f3 worked fine and also the other tty except the f1.
when selected it kept trying to load up the f1 user but simply could't, tried to reinstal gnome but always the gdm3 error kept appearing and some others, I found fixes on ubuntu forums, plenty of them but none worked. They actually killed my tty users to the point where no tty f* worked.
I hope I learn more to be able to combat these problems in the future. Still love linux tho!
