Why did my computer stop sending audio to my speakers? How can I debug this?

I'm running Ubuntu 20.10. I bought some desktop speakers. They have a DAC built-in, so I connected them by USB cable. They were working, and then they stopped. When I plug them in, I get two output devices:

  • Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Audioengine HD3
  • Analog Output - Audioengine HD3

Neither works. Which one am I supposed to be using? I'm surprised to see an analog option when it's connected by USB.

When I connect to the speakers via Bluetooth from my phone, they work. I also have headphones plugged into the computer via 3.5mm and they work when I select that output. So the computer can play audio, and the speakers work, the computer just won't send the audio signal to the speakers. How do I even begin to debug this issue and figure out where the problem is?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
