Kernels seem to be dependent upon themselves so I cannot upgrade

in flag

I'm trying to upgrade from 17.10 (I know, I know) to 20.04 LTS. I keep getting errors regarding the kernel's dependencies. When I dug into it, it appears that the kernels seem to have themselves as dependancies.... Unless I'm reading this wrong.

cainram@plexVM:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-128-generic : Depends: linux-image-4.4.0-128-generic but it is not installed
linux-image-generic : Depends: linux-image-4.4.0-210-generic but it is not installed or
linux-image-unsigned-4.4.0-210-generic but it is not installed
Recommends: thermald but it is not installed
linux-modules-extra-4.4.0-210-generic : Depends: linux-image-4.4.0-210-generic but it is not installed or
linux-image-unsigned-4.4.0-210-generic but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

I have tried the various methods to fix broken packages and resolve unmet dependencies. Any insight here? Thanks in advance.

Theoretically you could upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04 LTS and then from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS, but I think you will save time and avoid problems, if you backup the files that you want to keep and them make a fresh installation of 20.04.2 LTS.

17.10 as a standard release, went EOL 9 months after release. The supported upgrade path from 17.10 ended **three years ago**. Your best path is to install a supported release. Upgrade will be cumbersome and filled with road blocks. If you will not upgrade every 6-9 months you should use a LTS release

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking with 17.10, I've been using Ubuntu since 8.04, I know how support schedules work, it was silly. I had a feeling it was an EOL issue. I just don't feel like migrating my whole Plex media server install. Them's the breaks, I suppose! I needed to increase the VM's HDD size anyway. Thanks for the input!

Ubuntu 17.10 or the 2017-October release is EOL (*end-of-life*). https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2018/07/19/ubuntu-17-10-artful-aardvark-end-of-life-reached-on-july-19-2018/ Refer https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades but note it's no longer supported on this site due to EOL status (https://askubuntu.com/help/on-topic) *Provided primarily for the EOLUpgrades link which contains useful detail that may help you*

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
