in flag

How can I update my 18.04 to 20.04? Since JAN 2021 I keep getting error messages [enter image description here][1]: Failed to download repository information

I am caring for my mother who has dementia and I lack time and knowledge. I asked xiao in Apr 25, 2021, 2:17 PM to [email protected] Hello Xiao, I was just preparing screenshots to send you from my ubuntu computer. I also got a pop up saying a new version was available and I clicked on it. A message popped up saying that it was taking a long time and had the choice to wait or force quit. I chose wait and it popped up immediately again and I chose force quit. This froze the computer completely except for the mouse. I am now on a Windows laptop to be able to access my gmail. Would you recommend that I press the start/stop button of my Ubuntu laptop to force it to reset?

xiao sent me 2 Ways to Upgrade Ubuntu 20.04/20.10 To 21.04 (GUI & Terminal). but I need to get from 18.04 to 20.04 first. thanks.

If a *release-upgrade* from 18.04 to 20.04 was in progress and that was what was forced quit... it'll depend where it was up to. If it was still downloading & hadn't started installing you should have no issues... If however it had started installing the upgrades you've got problems. I'd see if it'll boot (into text mode) and look to see where it was, and try and continue the upgrade - from terminal and not GUI. Yes it'll be possible, but how easy will depend on where it was up to. At last resort I'd `fsck` the partition & unclean install (ie. upgrade via re-install without format).

FYI: *release-upgrades* can take an awful long time so shouldn't be pushed. The speed can vary on hardware resources, internet bandwidth, packages installed & to be upgraded.. I've *release-upgraded* two boxes this week, and I allowed 24 hours for them to complete (I have no idea how long they took, less than that of course, but I've had upgrades take 28 hours in the past). If the machine doesn't have a load of resources, it can be painful to use during upgrade (I don't touch my boxes during upgrade) and it was trying to use it probably caused the dialog that led to the force-quit that ...

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
