Ubuntu 21.04: Samsung Laptop won't boot with ACPI

in flag

I have a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro. It worked amazingly well with ubuntu 18, but has a lot of trouble booting with Ubuntu 20+. I originally had these problems with 20.04, and then upgraded to 21.04 in the hopes that it would resolve the issue.

The boot problems typically manifest as either a CPU Stall Detected error or else never making it past the boot screen.

The only way I can get it to reliably boot is with acpi=off added to the boot parameters. However, this obviously isn't ideal, as I lose all peripheral input (e.g. battery monitoring, touchscreen etc.). Using acpi=strict does not help either.

Where do I start debugging this? I have found articles (1,2) that suggest an EFI issue but this does not seem to be the case here, as it loads fine without blacklisting the efi drivers but with acpi disabled.

Regarding BIOS settings, fast boot is disabled, as is secure boot.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
