Bridging static LAN with outside dynamic WLAN

fr flag

long time leecher first time poster so excuse me for beginner mistakes, i'm also tired after trying for hours:

I'm trying to set up a bridge between a static LAN (internal network) and a dynamic WLAN (outside world), why dynamic? I tried multiple times to set it as static but then the Hotspot on my Android device doesn't want to connect.

But.. With my WLAN set to dynamic i don't know how to bridge it because the IP it gets changes with every time i connect (when not using it the Hotspot turns off to save battery).

Usecase: I travel a lot so i saved on my internet connection at home and upped the speed on my mobile connection and now i want to connect my mobile via Hotspot with the fileserver which handles the internal network.. Should be as easy as coming home, turn on the hotspot and start using the internet on multiple PCs. Current wireless device is a Alfa but will buy something PCIe soon

Can someone tell me what to do because i'm out of ideas, also seem to Google the wrong things because i can't find an answer.. Thats why i finally made a profile here. Also, not really a savvy, googling almost always seems to work with my problems

Do you mean WAN (Wide Area Network) and not WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)? This sounds like you want a DDNS (Dynamic DNS) service like what No-IP or FreeDNS (or any others) can offer you. They allow you to pick a domain name for free that you can setup with your router using a Dynamic WAN IP that will update when your WAN IP changes.

No, i really meant WLAN.. Android running Hotspot is "the internet", WLAN needs to connect to Hotspot using dynamic address, WLAN device is in PC that needs to bridge with LAN/Ethernet, LAN/Ethernet goes to my switch and serves the clients.. So in a basic sense my fileserver must act as a router i guess?

Please clean up your question then making it not so complicated to follow. WLAN is not outside world, but still part of your LAN. You can setup a DHCP server on the PC that you have there and set the port that goes to WiFi to the DHCP and make sure that you make the range outside of what your Static IP range is, but keep it in the same subnet. Use this https://www.subnet-calculator.com/ calculator to help you see what IPs are in the same range.

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Router for setting up Ubuntu as a router.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
