Ubuntu upgrade failure - how to recover system or at least files

us flag

I have just had a gigantic failure of upgrade and I am in desperate need for help.

I tried to follow the instructions to upgrade ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04. But when the process was showing 'connecting to server' at 0%, I stupidly pressed ctrl+c to stop it. This caused significant problems.

I rebooted the system, now i dont even have the right ubuntu version. I cannot describe it properly because the system is behaving very strangely. For example

  • the interface, all icons are gone.
  • i can still log on to the system, but I cannot see any icons, which are still there because if you move your mouse cursor on top of them, the text appears
  • i cannot use almost anything except chrome. For example, as soon as I click 'terminal' it logs me off. I cannot open file browser, etc...

I think I really need help to know

  • can I still undo the installation to revert back to my previous system?
  • if not, can I still have a safe way to access the file system and get all my data out?

Any tips highly appreciated!!

UPDATE I have followed this link Upgrade from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS crashed, Now I have no access to my Ubuntu system

  1. Boot into recovery mode Select the network option. Once that's done press enter to return to the recovery menu.
  2. Select the dpkg option. This produces the output An upgrade from bionic to focal is not supported with this tool
  3. Press enter to return to the recovery menu. Select the root option and type in do-release-upgrade and then apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

But then I got a series of errors. Please see the screenshot attached showing what I tried and the messages:

Basically it had problems with installing chromium. It says that a 18.04 version is installed but a 20.04 version is needed for dependencies. But when I tried to follow the advice to install it, it did not work, creating an error: cannot perform operation mount --rbind /dev /tmp/snap.rootfs_j61Tex//dev no such file or directory

I then searched this error, and someone suggested checking snap version, and here it is:

Any suggestions how I can continue please?

UPDATE 2 So I am following guiverc's suggestion in the comment and trying to follow the installation process by choosing 'something else'. And I have the first screen below. However, I am not sure how to configure this step, as when I click 'continue', I got the second screen error. And when double clicking some of the existing partitions I get a menu, but I am not sure how to select the options (screen 3)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
