How to fetch email in the background?

ng flag

I use GNOME Evolution as my email and calendar client. It only sends email notifications and event reminders while Evolution is running. Is there a way to make the notifications component run in the background so that I still get notified without always having to keep an Evolution window open? I am on Ubuntu 20.04.

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu. Please [edit your question](https://askubuntu.com/posts/1351149/edit) and add which distro and version of Linux you are running.

A simple solution would be add Evolution to startup automatically when you login to Ubuntu. You do this by editing **Startup Applications Preferences** See [here for more](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddingProgramToSessionStartup).

@user68186 That's not a solution, he'd still have an Evolution window open...

On 18.04 LTS and 20.04 LTS you can install the package evolution-indicator.
It should provide the functionality you want.

Below is a screen from Synaptic:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
