PulseAudio vs Laptop combo microphone/headset input - CODEC?

id flag

spent several hours last night and this morning troubleshooting this problem to no avail and I'm trying to determine whether this is a "CODEC issue", a "config problem", or what. Here's the details:

I have an older Asus laptop (UX501V) that my wife has been using for our online gaming sessions but I'm trying to get her rolled over to Linux, particularly in light of the lack of support for the hardware coming up for Win11. She was trying to get Discord to recognize the laptop's microphone/headphone input last night and we weren't able to get it to work. Output comes out of the headphones, but the microphone isn't recognized. I've done a number of searches and found a number of solutions that appear to have worked for others, but did not work for this machine. The laptop uses a Realtek ALC668

I have managed to get input response after selecting the input in the Audio settings, pavucontrol shows the input bouncing as I tap on the microphone, but Discord's test of the headset is not working - I either get no response at all or a "static wave" or "shhhhh shhhh shhh" sound monitoring the input inside Discord.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I feel like I'm really close to getting this working, but something continues to escape me. Also - I've confirmed that the headset microphone functions on this laptop in Windows (cold booted after checking), as well as another Linux laptop running Mint 20

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
