Boot load error after upgrading to v20.04

ro flag

I've been running v18.xx for a while as I learn to get to grips with Linux. A couple of days ago the software update prompted me to upgrade to version 20.04. The update appeared to run to completion and I was asked to reboot the machine. When I did the first thing I noticed was the boot menu, whilst retaining the options of Ubuntu, Memtest and Windows 10 hand changed from a purple screen with small test to a black and white one with larger text. I put this down to the upgrade and selected Ubuntu to at what had changed. All I then got - and get - is the following error messages:

Error: Attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd1'

Error: You need to load the kernel first

Can anyone please advise on how to rectify this - preferably in simple language as I am still very much a novice with Linux.

Addendum If I go into the advanced options choice from the main Grub menu and use one of the earlier versions listed Ubuntu will load albeit it takes longer and there are a lot of onscreen messages scrolling past. However v20.04 finally loads and works albeit with reduced video driver performance. It would seem that the load path called in the main Grub menu is incorrect?? So if someone could advise on how to try changing that it would be appreciated.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
