Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Network borked it seems

jp flag

So I've got seven of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS virt guests both deployed from the same image. Two of these cannot reach a set of Cisco Umbrella servers for DNS... the other all can. Testing using ping and 'telnet 53'.

I'm asking this question here because I do not fully understand systemd-resolved and from what I gather it's become super important in 20.04. And my suspicion started when I compared a 'route' on a host that works and one that doesn't.

The one that does not work shows the Gateway value as the actual network gateways IP address as it is from the /etc/netplan/network.yaml file. But the host that does work.. the one that can reach Umbrella shows '_gateway' instead. Speaking of the netplan yaml's are all identically built with the correct corresponding info (static ip's, subnets, gateways, etc)

I'm still researching this and while I don't feel it's a problem I am at a loss as to why the difference.
I'm experienced in Linux but not a guru by any means so feel free to browbeat me over a silly question like this but I simply cannot figure out why these two refuse to reach DNS.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
