Ubuntu live CD shows windows network despite fresh HDD & unplugged cable

vn flag

I suspect that I had been hacked after I found a remote connection file in Windows that was set to execute a file called "Remote connection phone" or something. After booting into ubuntu live CD, Ubuntu showed me a Windows network but whenever I clicked on it it said "unable to connect". I am using a desktop and never used W-Lan, only an ethernet cable. The network didn't disappear so I was thinking that this must've had something to do with my windows partition so I formated the entire disk and removed everything on it.

I had the ethernet cable still unplugged even until this point(writing this post from a friends computer). So after erasing my disk I thought just to be sure, I once again booted into the Linux live CD and to my surprise the windows network is still showing up. still unable to connect to it. Not a tech geek, but my guess is that my machine has been hacked by someone withing close vincinity and it looks to me they somehow gained wireless access to my PC. A room mate or neighbor? What do you guys think?

The presence of a "Windows network" is perfectly normal (and that you can't connect to anything there is also normal). All the rest are, to put it mildly, uneducated assumptions. Everything you describe is NOT a cause for concern and even if it was, asking for opinions is not the purpose of this website.

@ChanganAuto wouldn't an explanation of why the Windows Network thing shows up in this situation be an (non opinion-based) answer? If I knew about this I'd go ahead and post an answer, but all I know is that my samba share appears in it, so it's probably something to do with samba...

Yes, all it takes is one Windows computer or anything else using samba having connected once to the same router, or the router itself, with or without actual network shares configured. And because Windows currently uses more restrict protocols the shares have to be set with smb://..... clicking on "Windows network" shows nothing.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
