don't get 'install alongside windows 10'

jp flag

Excuse me but I am a newbie to linux. My computer came with W10 installed (i5, 500 G HD, 4G RAM). I am trying to install ubuntu 20.04 with W10. On boot, with ubuntu on USB drive, W10 does not appear on the initial screen. Error messages flash on the screen:

'VMAX disabled by BIOS'

'can't evaluate CRS'

'error communicating with TPM chip' (this is repeated about 10 times)

Then ubuntu appears, and I can happily 'try it out' and run off the USB, it seems completely functional. But trying to install I do not get the option to install alongside w10, only 'erase disk...' and 'something else'. I need to install, as I want to also install aps (including Java and Vassal), presumably I have to instal ubuntu to do that, and I don't want to lose W10.

Do you have *hibernate* and/or *fastboot* disabled? Otherwise the file-system will be unclean (data stored within the hibernate/fastboot file that isn't on the file-system), thus those partition(s) are ignored allowing only "Erase disk and Install" options...

to add to that: " to install alongside w10" also only shows up if you have unallocated partitions. You need to do that from windows before installing Ubuntu.

guiverc; by hibernate do you mean sleep? OK i found that in the control system (W10). searched for fastboot in the start menu, nothing found.

Rizwind; unallocated partition. I didn't see that in any instruction for installing ubuntu anywhere. OK, I created a new partition, 100GB, using default options (drive letter E:, NTFS, quick format). Still does not work

**You need unallocated space - not a partition -, creating a partition in Windows is a waste of time because you CAN'T install Ubuntu in NTFS**. You need to disable **Fast Startup** in Windows: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup and, strongly recommended, LEARN about UEFI and its requirements. Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
