Edit your question and show me `free -h` and `sysctl vm.swappiness` and `swapon -s` and screenshots of the `Disks` app **SMART Data & Tests** data window. Start comments to me with @heynnema or I'll miss them.

We know nothing about your hardware, but I'd boot a different OS (*live* or not installed and just running off thumb-drive) and verify your hardware is okay, including RAM tests & likely a cap-scan (ie. open laptop & check out motherboard for swollen caps etc). You haven't given clues as to what you were doing (is your laptop struggling with RAM, you have swap enabled as heynnema asked) and did SysRq keys allow clean shutdown (instead of power-off?), switch to text term & explore? giving indication it's just the GUI that is stuck & not the system (power-off reveals nothing & can do damage)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
