activation of network connection failed for ethernet, ubuntu 20.04, dual boot with Windows 10

vn flag

I have seen other posts that are similar to my situation but I think I am really confused at to why I get network connection failed.

I have a dual boot, Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10.

I do not have any problems so far.

I did not install anything new but yesterday Ubuntu started to give me the Network Connection failed prompt.

I had disabled fast boot even before the installation of Ubuntu. I have tried rebooting the router. I have tried apt-get update and install reinstall network-manager.

Internet works fine in Windows 10. I only use Ethernet cable.

Trying some commands from other posts shows:

Can you try to connect to the Internet (i.e. by plugging in the cable), then run `dmesg | grep e1000e`, and add that to your question?

Look at the logs! `sudo journalctl -b 0 -u NetworkManager`. Read `man journalctl`.

The e1000e driver has a known issue pertaining to your network card’s powersaving feature which is activated by the Windows driver. You need to reset the PCIe device to continue using it in Linux.

The steps are outlined here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/620766

This needs to be done every time after starting Windows.

You should also report a kernel bug, if there is not already one.

before doing this i have to ask, i use a pci to m.2 adapter for my booting device. is this pcie device reset going to interfere with this? thank you for your help!

@xapnsma, the honest answer is I don’t know, but this sounds unlikely. This is a temporary reset. Rebooting the machine requires another reset, so the procedure is at most temporary.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
