How to install Ubuntu in a USB while in UEFI mode?

be flag

I want to create a portable ubuntu like plug and play in any system. So, I moved on to install ubuntu on a 32GB pen drive. The process that I have been gone through is

  1. Made a 8GB bootable pen drive
  2. Entered boot option and selected ubuntu in test mode
  3. Inserted my 32 USB drive and went on to install ubuntu like basic language selection and keyboard.
  4. Then I clicked "Something else" for partitioning and there comes my USB drive and I deleted all the USB drive partition and created a new one with format of ext4 journaling file system and mount point as / and it is primary

After this thing below there is device to store boot loader information and I selected my USB drive which is 32GB and I further clicked on install now and there comes the error.

The error is The attempt to mount a file system with type vfat in SSI1(0,0,0),partition#1(sda)at/boot/efi failed

and I'm running Windows 11 beta. What is the possible solution for it?

I also don't want GRUB loader in my PC. The thing I want is that whenever I plugged this bootable USB and entered the boot option then I can use ubuntu and this is my case.

You probably want a Full install flash drive that boots both UEFI and BIOS modes, For a quick and easy method see: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1300454/easy-full-install-usb-that-boots-both-bios-and-uefi For a more traditional method see: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1217832/how-to-create-a-full-install-of-ubuntu-20-04-to-usb-device-step-by-st

It is easiest to install into an external drive, after you have unplugged or otherwise disabled the internal drive. Otherwise, in UEFI mode, the Ubuntu installer will install the bootloader into the internal drive, even when you tell it to put the bootloader somewhere else.

@C.S.Cameron I tried the second link which follows the steps given by ubuntu but still the error above is arising and it seems the progress bar is not even moving so I left it for an hour and still the same. Could you help me with this please?

Best if working in UEFI boot mode to unplug the Windows drive before proceeding. If you can do the setup in BIOS mode, you can get by leaving the Windows disk plugged in. I think safe mode should be turned off.

@C.S.Cameron Are you asking to change the mode from UEFI to legacy? so, in that case If I successfully installed the OS and I change back to UEFI mode now can I boot the ubuntu by pressing `F12` Key and run linux?

@hamere That is what works for me. It should then boot on both Legacy and UEFI computers.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
