VSCode remote ssh terminal not using environment variables

eg flag

I'm using an Ubuntu machine as a headless dev machine. I am connecting through VSCode Remote-SSH. I open a terminal from within vscode and try to run 'go' but I get told the command cannot be found. I try it within a normal terminal without any issue. I noticed the environment variable list is vastly different between the vscode terminal and the traditional terminal. I placed the go executable in /etc/environment.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
