How is it possible to select the WiFi band of a network connection given the router sets that?

pl flag

For a given WiFi connection, I can use nm-connection-editor to configure it, e.g.: Select the connection -> Settings (Cog) -> Wi-Fi -> Band -> B/G (2.4 GHz).

But what is the meaning of that choice, given that for each SSID to which the adapter connects the router already defines the frequency? I would guess it should always be ... -> Band -> Automatic, and then the band would be given by the SSID.

Would/should a combination of:

  1. an SSID that in the router is set to work with 5 GHz
  2. a selection of ... -> Band -> B/G (2.4 GHz)

work?

I just tried this myself, and I am now connected to an SSID for which the router uses 5 GHz, and I selected B/G (2.4 GHz). Why does this work?

In addition to why does this work, I do not understand conceptually the meaning of simply having such a setting.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
