Intermitent issues entering AD password when using VPN on Ubuntu 20.04

I log into my ubuntu20.04 laptop using my companies AD credentials, it's connected to the kerberos AD realm and this works fine in general. We also have a VPN which I connect to through a modified NetScaler Gateway client that works on 20.04. In general this setup works fine but I occasionally find that if I let the laptop go to sleep or go to the lock screen while connected to the VPN, when I try to enter my domain password to log in again it takes a long time to respond before coming back with "something went wrong try again".

I am confident I'm using the correct password it just appears to be unable to auth me against AD. Because I can't log in, and therefore can't turn the VPN off, all I can really do is reboot the laptop and potentially lose work. Are there any steps I can take from the terminal (without logging in as my AD user...) that could point out to me why it has stopped, or to log me in using the locally stored password? After the reboot everything works fine both on and off the VPN

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
