Please let us know which version of Ubuntu you are using, so we can help (this should be under the About page in settings listed as OS Name). Also, did anything change that you know of between the time when it worked and when it stopped working? Finally, I'm going to suggest a rephrasing of your title to put it into a question format. These things will help ensure your question gets better visibility and that the answers you get are most helpful.

Add the info about your system to your question (use "Edit"). This is not normal behaviour. Just typing should activate the search dialog. Do you have extensions installed?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
