Dell Vostro 5502 running ubuntu 20.04 audio confusion

us flag

I have a Dell vostro 5502 laptop, running ubuntu 20.04. There are several issues with audio.

Sometimes I plug in headphones and it does not detect them, if I adjust the audio it will still say "speaker", with no sound out of headphones or speaker.

Sometimes vice versa, with not detecting that the headphones have been removed.

If I reboot the computer then the issues are fixed.

I recently reinstalled ubuntu, the issue is still present, I'm not sure what causes it --- I don't think it is hardware, jiggling the headphone jack slightly doesn't change anything and I don't think there have been any hard knocks to the headphone jack. Sometimes audio will fail even if I have not been using headphones.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
