Read error - read (21: Is a directory)

br flag

I am fairly new to Ubuntu , I just started using Ubuntu on Virtualbox for work purposes. Out of nowhere, I started getting an error on boot "Error: /dev/sda5 contains a file system with errors, check forced". So I ran the command fsck -f /dev/sda5 and Ubuntu booted up.

But after I rebooted, I saw my terminal changed color from the usual to white, and whenever I try to do anything, I get the error "Read error - read (21: Is a directory)". I tried running sudo apt update , sudo apt-get update ,sudo apt-get upgrade and even tried to use software updater but this error always comes up in the terminal:

E: Read error - -read (21: Is a directory)
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

What should I do to fix this issue. I large files here that are important so I really can't afford to run a fresh install of Ubuntu.

*I large files here that are important so I really can't afford to run a fresh install of Ubuntu.* That's what backups are for and in a VM having proper snapshots is probably a good idea.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
