Tethering to iPhone greyed out & "disconnected"

cn flag

Hope you can help a noob with this, or point me to a prev. answered question. I'm trying to USB tether to an iPhone SE 2016 (iOS 14.1) to my Thinkpad X230, running Ubuntu Studio 20.04.3 LTS (Xfce), 5.11.0-8-lowlatency kernel. All connections were good at times, now tether options are greyed out. I've installed ipheth-utils, libimobile-dev and libimobile-utils, tried switching to systemd-networkd (also running systemd-resolved) and modded the config file w/ my ethernet logical name. I went back to NetworkManager (although systemd-networkd runs still, triggered by 'socket'), still no tethering. I've enabled/disabled nmcli networking/ncmli radio wifi, NetworkManager, modprobed iwlwifi, iwldvm and e1000e (driver), and tried other things I've since forgotten. Restarts/power offs don't seem to reset/fix things. Any help appreciated.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
