Chrome download prompts to use xdg, but proceeds to do nothing

ng flag

I am trying to download a fasta file for a bioinformatics project ftp://ftp.ensembl.org/pub/release-102/fasta/mus_musculus/dna/

Unfortunately every single time I try to download this file I get a popup asking me to use xdg. I cannot get this to work and there is no other source from which I can get this file. I have spent nearly a day trying to get this simple file, aaagh.

If anyone can help me get this file downloaded and get rid of the popup I would really appreciate it. I'm sure that when I want to use xdg I will do so from cli, but right now I could do with just being able to download the file

when I try and use xdg from the cli to download the file it says "operation not supported"

I tried generating an allow list per https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/7532419 but this didn't work either, I tried changing the default program for xdg to google-chrome.desktop for both http and https and this has not worked either.

Here is the software I am using

Chrome Version 96.0.4664.45 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Description: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Release: 20.04 Codename: focal

If there is anything else you need from me to help solve this issue I would really appreciate it. I am very new to linux so please be forthcoming with information, I am likely missing basic intermediate steps, assume I don't know anything :) cheers.

Thank you very much for taking the time out to help.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
