Having trouble booting after replacing Windows Vista with Ubuntu 16.04

jp flag

I recently was given an old laptop with windows vista and i made it boot from a usb with Ubuntu 16.04. While it worked fine while I was setting up Ubuntu. I picked the language and all of the stuff it asked. I set it to replace windows vista when it installed. That finished and I reboot it.

The HP logo appears like normal with the text at the bottom left of the screen that reads Press ESC for Startup Menu.

I tried doing this. I tried F10 and F8. I’m using a HP Mini 311. From what research I’ve done, I haven’t been able to fix my problem.

Edit:

I figured out my issue. The laptop wouldn’t boot when my mouse was plugged in. I think it had something to do with the boot order I had set up? I’m not sure. It works fine when the usb drive was plugged in, just not the mouse,

Welcome. Lots of problems that need addressing: (1) Ubuntu 16.04 is out of support and off-topic here. (2) your hardware is an old and very underpowered 32-bit computer even for its contemporary standards. Currently there's no Ubuntu variant that fits such hardware. The 32-bit architecture has been abandoned years ago. (3) You may want to try Debian as it still supports 32-bit (but probably not for very long).

See this question for a list of supported 32 bit OS. [What options do I have to upgrade an unsupported i386 version of Ubuntu to an operating system with newer packages?](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1361769/what-options-do-i-have-to-upgrade-an-unsupported-i386-version-of-ubuntu-to-an-op)

See also [this link 'Old hardware brought back to life'](https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2130640) to a megathread at the Ubuntu Forums. I think it will work with one of the Puppy Linux versions, for example BionicPup, that I tried recently on an eeePC.

[Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has reached the end of it's *standard* support life](https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2021/03/13/extended-security-maintenance-for-ubuntu-16-04-xenial-xerus-begins-april-30-2021/) thus is now off-topic here unless your question is specific to helping you move to a supported release of Ubuntu. Ubuntu 16.04 ESM support is available, but not on-topic here, see https://askubuntu.com/help/on-topic See also https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-16-04-lts-transitions-to-extended-security-maintenance-esm

FYI: I QA-tested with devices as old as from 2003 (pentium M, pentium D, pentium 4, etc) with later releases than 16.04 (largely *flavors* but that included Ubuntu too); so I'd opt for a *supported* system over using EOL software if you're going to have your box online. You're welcome to use ESM though; but support on sites like this are off-topic so if you're happy with fewer support options or paid support great; I'd opt as stated for a later release.

Thanks for sharing your solution :-) I think other users can have similar problems, that USB devices can disturb the function for other USB devices. So if you write an own 'formal Answer' and after a couple of days 'accept' it, your solution will be easier to find.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
