Suddenly get a black screen on login

cn flag

After connecting my android phone through USB the screen on my laptop (Ubuntu 20.04) went black. I restarted and when I boot to Ubuntu it now always shows a black screen. I use Nvidia drivers and already tried hitting e and replacing quiet splash with nomodeset. After it shows some text lines for a short while and then it goes black again.

I think this was a misunderstanding on my part. It seems a hardware issue was responsible. Some USB ports were suddenly not working including the one that was charging the laptop. I still don't understand why I saw the behavior that I saw but it seems a low battery was responsible. Charging through an alternative USB port I managed to boot into Ubuntu correctly. (Even more confusingly the USB ports are now working again. I also still have to test whether the laptop can boot when on the battery again. I am confused whether this was a hardware or a software issue.)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
