Install Ubuntu on external SATA drive

in flag

For some time now I had been struggling to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu on seperate drives, the last time I tried I got into grub, but when selecting Ubuntu I got something along the lines of these errors:

Unknown device: [uuid]
Cannot get C/H/S values
You need to load the kernel first

I installed Ubuntu on a removable harddrive connected via a SATA cable and now I am wondering if you can even install Ubuntu on a drive like that. If so, what did I mess up during installation? Note: I have legacy BIOS and Windows 10 on my main SSD Important note: I created a seperate boot partition on the external drive and without it I cant access grub

Dual Boot advice: I suggest you read `https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-on_self-test` , `https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS` , `https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_boot_record` , `https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table` , `https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFI` . One will have the Answer. Read the others to understand that one.

Ubuntu's Ubiquity only installs in UEFI mode to first drive's ESP - efi system partition. If external drive you want ESP & grub on external drive. Old but still valid bug. Posted work around to manually unmount & mount correct ESP during install #55 or( #23 & #26) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1396379 & http://askubuntu.com/questions/743095/how-to-prepare-a-disk-on-an-efi-based-pc-for-ubuntu And (also in bug report) https://askubuntu.com/questions/16988/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-to-a-usb-key-without-using-startup-disk-creator If legacy just install grub to external.

Maybe [this link](https://askubuntu.com/questions/16988/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-to-a-usb-key-without-using-startup-disk-creator/942312#942312) can be helpful if you want the drive portable. If you can unplug, disconnect or otherwise disable the internal drive, it will be much easier to make a complete and portable Ubuntu system into an external drive. If you need no portability, you can just install it like into any partition (and let the installer put part of the boot structure in the internal drive, it will still work in the computer where you installed it).

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
