Lubuntu 18.04: USB WiFi driver installed, "nothing happens"

in flag

Thank you for hosting this helpful forum. I'm new to Linux, so please forgive my lack of expertise. My WiFi connection has to be established through a WiFi USB adaptor, namely realtek 8811cu wireless lan 11 ac usb nic. It took me a while to understand how to execute the driver's shell script, but succeeded with sudo ./install.sh. The driver should now be installed. However, when I try to add a WiFi connection to the network configuration, I do not see anything I can use or understand. I get this box in which I need to fill in details that are rather complicated to a not-so-technical user, such as "ssid". I was hoping that after having the driver installed, I might simply select which router I wish to connect to, and then have my internet access; just like with Windows. Maybe (and most likely) I am missing something?

Thank you,

Invictus

Are you certain that you installed the correct driver? May we see a link to the driver? Please edit your question to show the result of the terminal command: `lsusb` and also: `sudo dmesg | grep 8811` Welcome to Ask Ubuntu.

FYI: Lubuntu 18.04 LTS is no longer supported; refer https://lubuntu.me/bionic-eol/ or https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2020/08/14/ubuntu-18-04-5-lts-released/ where you'll note only Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Desktop & Ubuntu Cloud come with 5 years of support; *flavors* had shorter lives. I'd suggest using `ubuntu-support-status` to assess the security status of your actual install. Your question is still on-topic here, but consider how much security matters to you and the results of prior command. You're now using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with LXDE (*not Lubuntu*).

Beyond using a mostly-EOL release, you've not provided clues as to what kernel stack you're using. Ubuntu LTS releases offer two stacks, the GA or *general* stack & HWE or *hardware enablement* for newer hardware; with Lubuntu the default stack is determined by your installation media (though can be changed), for best responses you should tell us which you're using (as installing the other stack can change *drivers* as they're actually kernel modules; thus kernel being used matters) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessTroubleShootingGuide (step 3 device recognition is useful)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
