Software Updater stuck at "Running post-installation trigger dpkg-exec"

in flag

I am using 18.04.5 LTS. When I try to install updates using the Software Updater, it shows the "Installing updates..." box and the progress bar makes it almost halfway, but it gets stuck at "Running post-installation trigger dpkg-exec" and does not progress past that point, even if I leave it overnight. When I click on Details, it displays:

What can I do to fix this and update my software? I know I am overdue to update my Ubuntu version, but I am worried that process will get hung up as well.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
