Unable to get vino-server working in Ubuntu 20.04, vncserver works

I am able to get vncserver displaying, but it doesn't show the same desktop as Ubuntu driving a monitor. The only reason I tried vncserver was because I've used it before, but I'd like to use the recommended installed vnc server that comes with Ubuntu.

This is what works, I am using tightvnc client on a mac.

vncserver :1 -geometry 1280x800 -depth 16 -pixelformat rgb565

tried various combinations of the following from other posts:

gsettings set org.gnome.Vino require-encryption false
gsettings set org.gnome.Vino prompt-enabled true
/usr/lib/vino/vino-server
export DISPLAY=:0.0 && /usr/lib/vino/vino-server

but this only displays a blank screen. I am showing a functioning vncserver to indicate that I believe my environment is setup correctly in terms of sharing.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
