Java Web Start Applications on Ubuntu 20.04

gs flag

I had all of my webstart applications working on Ubuntu 16 but when I moved to Ubuntu 20, none of them work. I have tried both Oracles Java versions 8 up to 17 and openjdk. Neither would load the application. I have seen where webstart has been pulled from Java but I have the latest version installed on Windows and it is working fine so I'm a bit confused by that. What do I need to do to get my webstart applications working on Ubuntu 20?

"What do I need to do to get my webstart applications working" ⇢ Checking the logs would be a good place to start. With specific error messages, it becomes easier to offer specific solutions

The latest version of Java in Windows does not support applets/webstart IIRC. Java 8 should work fine, though. You could try [Iced Tea Web](https://github.com/AdoptOpenJDK/IcedTea-Web). It can probably run your `.jnlp` file.

I have tried Iced Tea and it will start the web start file and start loading then nothing. I haven't found where Java keeps logs. I did turn on logs in the Oracle Control Panel but I still never saw logs showing up in the folder where I had Java installed or in /var/log. It would show me errors on cli if it was missing a library it needed but that is all I really found.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
