How to install Ubuntu 20.04 on external drive when system has Intel RST on internal drive?

us flag

I want to install Ubuntu 20.04 on an external hard drive and it won't let me, saying I need to disable Intel RST first.

I have a Windows laptop with Intel RST installed. I have put the Ubuntu iso installer onto an external USB drive, and I am booting from that into the Ubuntu installer. The installer sees I have Intel RST and won't continue -- even though I don't want to install it on my internal drive. Is there a workaround (that doesn't require changing my Windows or BIOS settings) so that I can install Ubuntu on my external drive? I have read several similar posts that are all older and didn't see a suitable solution yet.

Open the laptop and take out all the internal drives. Then close it up and plug in the external drive and install Ubuntu on the external drive. Changing the BIOS setting may be easier.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
