My NVME drive doesn't pop up when installing Ubuntu

cn flag

EDIT: Problem solved! this dumbass had originally burned the iso onto my NVMe (i did this, due to that being the install procedure for tails) and when i realised this was the wrong way, windows didn't properly wipe the drive. Thanks to everyone who helped!<3

I'm having this problem, which i don't seem to have found a solution for. I bought a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB NVME drive. I wanted to install Ubuntu on it, but I can't seem to get it pop up when installing. Note that I have 3 other drives in my system, which i don't know if they cause any problems. I have a SATA SSD with windows on it, and two HDD's with games and movies on them.

I've tried two different methods. 1: I used BalenaEtcher to throw ubuntu directly onto the drive, which when i then arrived at the "erase drive and install ubuntu" page, i could see the SATA SSD and the two HDD's but not the NVME one. 2: I used BalenaEtcher to throw ubuntu on a USB, but with the same result as #1.

Sitting in windows disk manager i can see, a 4 MB FAT EFI partition and the rest is unallocated.

Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Have you tried a "something else" install where you directly specific the partitions to be used? Or are the nvme partition(s) not showing up at all? Do they show up in gparted if you boot to a live Ubuntu session?

Even before the previous suggestions: Is it recognized in UEFI ("BIOS")? If not there's your answer right there. If it is then what can prevent Ubuntu or any mainstream Linux distro from recognizing it is some incompatible drive mode like "RAID" or "Intel RST".

@OrganicMarble It doesn't even pop up in the Ubuntu partition segment. And i can see it in in the BIOS

@ChanganAuto It *is* detected in BIOS and it's in AHCI mode, not RAID. The intel thing isn't there, since im on AMD

Many systems require UEFI firmware update and even new SSD may need firmware update. If 4MB that is too small for an ESP. Windows typically does 100MB on smaller drives and we often suggest 500MB for the ESP. I use it to download firmware updates for UEFI as update must be in a FAT32 partition. check version `udisksctl status` or `sudo nvme -list` (may need to install nvme-cli) Samsung has bootable ISO by model for latest firmware: https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/

Thanks for the response, but I don't know what "It doesn't even pop up in the Ubuntu partition segment" means. This "pop up" terminology you use is nonstandard. I don't know what a "partition segment" is either. Clarity of problem expression will help you get an answer. The output of `sudo blkid` added to your question would help a lot.

@oldfred i already have the latest firmware for my NVME drive

@OrganicMarble ah sorry. It can't be found within the partition software of ubuntu. as for the blkid i can return to you in a second, currently rummaging around in windows to see if can do anything there. i did `lsblk -a` to check it if shows there, because i was recommended this on reddit, and it shows as `nvme0n1 259:0 0 465.8G disk /cdrom`

@OrganicMarble now i've tried typing `sudo blkid` into the terminal while using the Ubuntu live USB (idk if that's the proper terminology, that's what the reddit guys called it) and I've managed to get the NVMe that way. It shows as `/dev/nvme0n1p1: PARTUUID="2cf4ba3a-1"`

Good news that the OS recognizes it. In that case a "something else" install should work. In the installer screen when it asks you about using the whole disk, install alongside, etc, etc. select "something else" and allot the partitions specifically.

@OrganicMarble that's the problem, it doesn't show there. That was what i meant, when I said "It doesn't even pop up in the Ubuntu partition segment"

Is p1 NTFS, entire drive, and Windows fast start up on. That sets hibernation flag and then Linux NTFS driver will not mount the NTFS. It can be force mounted read only, but installer will not do that.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
