What commands to use to debug Internal Microphone?

br flag

I'm new to ubuntu systems and came across an issue where my internal microphone is not picking up any sound anymore. The microphone was working a few days ago, but now it has stopped and I'm not sure why.

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 and Clevo NJ70CU workstation. I've already tried Internal microphone not working and pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload a few times. The microphone works with a headset microphone, but for some reason cannot use the internal microphone anymore.

I need some help with trying to find any way to potentially debug this issue.

Maybe too obvious so sorry for the "dumb" question, but just in case: did you unplug your headset to use the internal microphone? Usually you cannot use the internal mic while a headset is plugged in.

Yes. I tried plugging and unplugging the headset and rebooting with it plugged in and unplugged. I'm looking for things to try in the terminal at this point. Have already tried the basic pulseaudio, alsa, pavucontrol settings.

and does `pavucontrol` show any activity for the internal mic on the "Input devices" section?

No it shows no activity for the internal mic. I've tried various configurations including setting left front and right front mic settings to 0.

next step I would do is to boot another OS (either another Linux distribution or Windows) as live image from USB stick to see, if another driver setup makes the mic work. Did `sudo dmesg|less` show any error messages on loading the module or driver for the audio interface of the kernel?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
